Cabernet Franc in a Chinon rosé

Chinon appellation rules make Cabernet Franc the main variety for both red and rosé. Cabernet Sauvignon is allowed only as an accessory variety, at no more than 10% of a grower’s plantings. Locally, Cabernet Franc is known as “breton”.

The Chinon appellation

Chinon is an AOC of the Touraine area of the Loire Valley, in the département of Indre-et-Loire, and its area comprises 26 communes. The appellation covers still, dry wines in red, rosé and white, and white Chinon is made from Chenin Blanc. The AOC was recognised by decree on 31 July 1937 and extends along the River Vienne around the town of Chinon, on soils developed on sands and gravels of the old terraces of the Vienne and on upper Turonian limestone. The specification sets minimum natural alcohol at 10.5% for red and rosé, and a yield of 55 hl/ha for all three colours.
