Pomerol 2009 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart

Château L’Église-Clinet 2009: a 99+ Pomerol in its original case
Château L’Église-Clinet 2009 is one of the highest-rated wines of a great Pomerol vintage. Robert M. Parker, Jr. scored it 99+ out of 100 in December 2011 and set its drinking window from 2022 to 2072. This is a full original wooden case of six bottles of 0.75 L — the format collectors prefer when a wine is meant to be cellared for decades.
Full and rich, but still in an infantile state of development… this wine needs to be cellared for 10 years but should keep for five decades or more. This 2009 is absolutely profound.
The plus sign after 99 is Parker’s way of saying the wine should gain further in bottle. The 2009 blends 85% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc and reaches just over 14.5% natural alcohol, a measure of how ripe the year was on the Pomerol plateau.

The estate and its place in Pomerol
L’Église-Clinet takes its name from the church of Pomerol, next to which its vines grow. For decades it was run by Denis Durantou, whose small, precise production turned the estate into one of the references of the appellation. Pomerol has no official classification — no grand cru, no premier cru — so reputation here rests on the wines alone, vintage after vintage.

2009 in Pomerol
On the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart, Pomerol 2009 scores 98, an outstanding year whose wines were approachable early yet built to last. L’Église-Clinet sits above even that level, which is why the 2009 is sought after in Bordeaux cellars around the world.

Cellaring and serving
The wine entered its window in 2022 and has many decades ahead of it. Bottles from an unopened case can be opened one by one over the years to follow its evolution. Serve at 16–18 °C; a young bottle benefits from an hour or two in a decanter, an older one from gentle handling and little air. Lamb, game and mature hard cheeses suit its depth.
