Nicolás Catena Zapata 2008: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Malbec from four vineyards
The 2008 Nicolás Catena Zapata is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Malbec. The fruit came from four vineyards: Adrianna at 1,450 m, Domingo at 1,120 m, La Pirámide at 950 m and Nicasia at 1,095 m. The bottle is 0.75 L and the wine is stated at 14% alcohol.
The wine was fermented entirely in barrel for 18 days, in new French oak foudres of 225 to 500 litres. It then spent 24 months in French oak.
Adrianna, Domingo, La Pirámide and Nicasia: planting years and soils
Adrianna, in Gualtallary, Tupungato, in the Uco Valley, was planted in 1992 and is the highest of the four. Its soils are sandy gravel with layers of limestone, generally at 20 to 50 cm depth. Domingo was planted the same year. La Pirámide dates from 1983, and Nicasia lies in Altamira, in the La Consulta district.
The 2008 comes from all four vineyards.
Catena Zapata from 1902 to the first Nicolás Catena Zapata in 1997
Nicola Catena founded the winery in Mendoza in 1902, after leaving Italy in 1898. Nicolás Catena Zapata took charge of the family business in 1963. The first vintage of the wine that carries his name was 1997, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec blend.
Mendoza: Andes foothills, irrigation and the Uco Valley fruit of Adrianna
Mendoza lies in the eastern foothills of the Andes with a continental, semi-arid climate; its vineyards are irrigated, largely with glacier and snowmelt water from the Andes. Adrianna, the highest of the four vineyards behind this wine at 1,450 m, is in Gualtallary, Tupungato, in the Uco Valley.
