Domaine Leroy and the 1988 start

Lalou Bize-Leroy founded Domaine Leroy in 1988 by buying Domaine Charles Noëllat in Vosne-Romanée. She also owns Domaine d’Auvenay, and was joint manager of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from 1974 to 1992. The estate farms about 22 ha, with Grand Cru plots in Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot, Clos de la Roche and Corton-Charlemagne. It uses ECOCERT certification for its biodynamic viticulture.

Yields average about 16 hl/ha, the estate limits bunches to four per vine, and grapes are fermented in wooden vats and aged in new barrels. It replaces missing vines with its own cuttings rather than replanting whole plots. Domaine Leroy is a separate business from the négociant Maison Leroy in Auxey-Duresses.

Leroy’s Genaivrières from a 94-point Côte de Nuits year

On the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart, red Côte de Nuits 2002 scores 94 and carries the letter R, which the chart defines as ready to drink. That is a rating of the vintage as a whole, not of this bottle. The Côte de Nuits is the hillside from Dijon south to Corgoloin, and Vosne-Romanée lies within it.
