One estate, one grape, a clay mound

The vineyard has been planted only with Merlot since about 2010, and the estate makes a single wine, about 30,000 bottles a year. The vineyard stands on a clay mound of roughly 20 ha known as the boutonnière, or buttonhole. Its soil is rich in iron and blue clay, unlike the gravel and sand of neighbouring vineyards.

Jean-Claude Berrouet’s era at Pétrus

Jean-Pierre Moueix’s négociant firm took over distribution of the wine in 1945, and Jean-Pierre Moueix acquired the Lignac family’s shares in 1964. Jean-Claude Berrouet became technical director that same year and held the post for 45 vintages until 2008, which covers 1988. His son Olivier Berrouet succeeded him in 2008. Before that, Madame Loubat had become sole owner in 1945 and died in 1961, and the estate then passed to her niece Lily Lacoste-Loubat and her nephew Lignac.

Pétrus without a classification rank

Pomerol has never had an official classification, and Pétrus holds no rank. It is nonetheless widely held to be equivalent to a premier cru. The estate lies in Bordeaux, on the Right Bank near Libourne.
