The estate sits in the north-west of Saint-Émilion, on the edge of Pomerol. Its soils are clay, gravel and sand rather than the limestone of the Saint-Émilion plateau. They lie over “crasse de fer”, an iron-rich sedimentary rock.

Cheval Blanc: vineyard, grand vin and classification

The grand vin spends 16 to 18 months in barrels, all new, with an output of about 80,000 bottles a year. The vineyard covers 42 hectares in 56 plots, planted to 55% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cheval Blanc was classified Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” in 1954, with the list published in 1955. It withdrew from the classification in July 2021 and is not on the 2022 list. The 2014 was produced while Cheval Blanc held Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” status, which it held when it withdrew in July 2021. This bottle belongs to the 1er Grand Cru Classé, within Bordeaux.
