Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2005: 97% Cabernet, 22 months in new French oak
The main fruit comes from Champoux Vineyard, which lies in the Horse Heaven Hills, with contributions from Klipsun and Tapteil. The blend is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot, aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. Our suggested drinking window is 2013–2033. Quilceda Creek has sourced fruit from Champoux since 1986.
A hot 2005 summer and a cool September
Summer 2005 was exceptionally warm and the berries stayed small. September then cooled, so the grapes ripened without being rushed.
The wine reached maturity around 2012 and should develop for 25 years or more.
Columbia Valley, the appellation on the label
Columbia Valley is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) established in 1984. It covers central, south-central and south-eastern Washington plus a small part of north-central Oregon, and it holds about 99% of Washington’s wine grape acreage. Rainfall is only 6–8 inches (152–203 mm) a year, so vineyards depend on irrigation from the Columbia River and Cascade snowmelt.
From a Snohomish garage in 1979 to the White House in 2011
Alex and Jeannette Golitzin founded Quilceda Creek in Snohomish, Washington, in 1978. The first vintage, in 1979, was 150 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon made in the family garage. Their son Paul Golitzin is president and director of winemaking. The winery sells through a private member list with a waiting list.
The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon was served at the state dinner that President Obama hosted for Chinese President Hu Jintao at the White House in 2011.
