Le Pin 1996: a small-production Pomerol
The 1996 is thirty years old and comes from a vineyard of 2 to 2.7 hectares in Pomerol. Production is 600 to 700 cases a year. The Laubie family owned the plot from 1924, before the Thienponts bought it.
The grand vin is Merlot. A few Cabernet Franc rows grow among the vines, but they are not used in the grand vin.
The estate behind the 1996
The Thienpont family bought the plot in 1979 for one million French francs, and 1979 was the first vintage under the Le Pin name. The name refers to a solitary pine tree that once stood near the property. Jacques Thienpont has owned the estate since 1979; the family also owns the neighbouring Vieux Château Certan.
Pomerol has no official classification, so Le Pin carries no classed-growth status.
Crasse de fer over limestone
The soil is gravel, clay and sand, with iron-rich clay (crasse de fer) over limestone bedrock. Planting density is about 6,000 vines per hectare. The estate ferments in small stainless-steel vats, seven tanks of 15 to 42 hectolitres. The current winery, designed by Robbrecht en Daem, opened in 2011, fifteen years after this vintage.
