Bathonian pebbles in the Côte de Nuits
The estate’s vines for this cuvée average 45 years old. The soil is rocky, stony and draining, made up of various Bathonian pebbles. Bathonian limestone, including the hard Comblanchien stone, forms the front of the Côte de Nuits escarpment, a vineyard strip about 20 km long in Burgundy.
A hospital’s vineyard
The Domaine des Hospices de Nuits is the vineyard estate of the Nuits-Saint-Georges hospital, founded around 1270. Its first vineyard donation dates from 1688, when Hugues Perdrizet gave two ouvrées. The hospital merged with the Hospices Civils de Beaune in 2016, yet the estate remains a separate domaine with its own auction.
Since 1961 the wines have been sold at auction rather than in bulk, on the model of the Hospices de Beaune. The sale takes place on the second Sunday of March at the Clos de Vougeot cellar, and the wine is offered in 228-litre Burgundian barrels. The estate covers a little over 12 hectares.
