Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro 2006: Aglianico and Piedirosso from Caserta

Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro 2006 is a dry red from the Caserta province of Campania, sold here in the 0.75 L bottle. It is labelled Roccamonfina IGT, and the estate has made it since 1994. The blend is 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso.

The 80/20 blend and 12 months in new Allier and Nevers barriques are the wine’s standing recipe.

Galardi and the Roccamonfina volcano

The estate lies in the Sessa Aurunca area, on the western slope of the Roccamonfina volcano, with the vines facing the Gulf of Gaeta. The soils are volcanic. The vineyards sit at about 500 metres.

The only Galardi wine for more than two decades

Terra di Lavoro is the flagship of Galardi. The 1994 first vintage was just 500 bottles, and it remained the estate’s only wine until Terra di Rosso, a Piedirosso, appeared in 2017. The 2006 therefore comes from a time when the whole estate rested on this one label.

From 0.5 ha in 1991 to the Capaldo era

Galardi was founded in 1991 by Roberto Selvaggi with his wife Maria Luisa and his cousins Arturo Celentano, Dora Catello and Francesco Catello. Vineyard area grew from 0.5 ha in 1991 to 4 ha in 1997 and 9.5 ha in 2008; it was about 10 ha in 2023. Organic certification dates from 1997.

In June 2023 Tenute Capaldo, the group led by Antonio Capaldo of Feudi di San Gregorio, acquired Galardi. Allegra Selvaggi, Roberto’s daughter, continues to run the estate, and Riccardo Cotarella stays on as consulting oenologist. Allegra joined the estate in 2018 to develop her father’s project.
