Domaine du Clos de Tart ‘Clos de Tart’ 2002
The Estate
Domaine du Clos de Tart stands as one of Burgundy’s most prestigious monopoles, a 7.53-hectare walled Grand Cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis that has been under single ownership since 1141. Acquired by the Mommessin family in 1932 and now owned by François Pinault’s Artémis Domaines, the estate has upheld centuries of winemaking tradition while embracing modern precision. The vineyard’s unique position on the mid-slope of the Côte de Nuits, combined with meticulous viticulture and masterful winemaking, produces wines of extraordinary depth, longevity, and distinctive character.
Clos de Tart Grand Cru – A Monopole Legend
Clos de Tart occupies a privileged east-facing slope in Morey-Saint-Denis, benefiting from optimal sun exposure and natural drainage. The vineyard’s Jurassic limestone soils, layered with red clay and iron-rich deposits, impart remarkable minerality and structure to the wines.
As a true monopole, Clos de Tart represents the vision of a single proprietor across the entire 7.53 hectares, allowing for unprecedented consistency and quality control. The ancient wall that encircles the vineyard creates a unique microclimate that protects the vines while concentrating flavors.
The terroir expresses itself through wines of incredible aromatic complexity, combining red and black fruits with forest floor notes, spice, and profound minerality—a signature that has made Clos de Tart one of Burgundy’s most sought-after Grand Crus.

The 2002 Vintage
The 2002 vintage in Burgundy was initially overshadowed by the acclaimed 1999 and 2001, yet it has revealed itself as a magnificent year for patient collectors. After a cool, wet spring, a warm July and ideal September conditions allowed for perfect ripening and balance.
For Clos de Tart, 2002 produced wines of remarkable elegance and purity, with perfectly integrated tannins and vibrant acidity that has allowed the wine to age gracefully. Now at full maturity, this vintage showcases the monopole’s ability to produce wines of both power and finesse, with tertiary aromas fully developed while maintaining excellent structure.
Tasting Experience
- Visual: Medium garnet with attractive brick-orange rim reflecting 20+ years of evolution
- Nose: Complex bouquet of dried cherries, forest floor, truffle, cinnamon, and sweet tobacco. Notes of dried roses, leather, and subtle game emerge with air, alongside hints of Asian spice and earl grey tea
- Palate: Silky, mature texture with perfectly integrated tannins. Flavors of red cherry compote, wild mushroom, and cedar interweave with secondary notes of sous-bois and exotic spice. The monopole’s signature minerality provides a spine of structure
- Finish: Long, ethereal finish with lingering notes of dried herbs, sandalwood, and subtle earthiness. The wine’s breeding and terroir shine through in the persistent, refined conclusion
Service & Food Pairing
Serve at 16-17°C (61-63°F) in large Burgundy stems. Decant for 30-45 minutes to allow the mature aromas to fully express themselves. This wine is at its peak drinking window and should be enjoyed within the next 3-5 years to appreciate its developed complexity.
Exceptional pairings:
- Roasted duck breast with black cherry and thyme reduction
- Coq au vin prepared with aged Burgundy
- Wild mushroom risotto with aged Comté
- Venison medallions with juniper berry sauce
- Époisses de Bourgogne or other washed-rind cheeses
Cellaring & Evolution
This 2002 vintage is now fully mature and drinking beautifully. While it has 3-5 years of optimal drinking ahead, it has reached that magical plateau where tertiary complexity meets retained fruit and structure. Store in a cool, dark cellar at 12-14°C with 70% humidity. The monopole’s exceptional terroir and winemaking ensure graceful aging even at this mature stage.
Collector’s Note: Clos de Tart is one of only five monopole Grand Crus in Burgundy, making it exceptionally rare in the world of fine wine. This 2002 vintage represents outstanding value for a fully mature monopole Grand Cru from one of Burgundy’s most historic estates. With the current owner François Pinault investing heavily in the domaine since 2018, older vintages like this have become increasingly sought-after as collectors recognize the estate’s legendary status.
