Domaine du Clos de Tart ‘Clos de Tart’ 2011

An elegant expression from a challenging yet ultimately rewarding vintage, this 2011 Clos de Tart showcases the monopole’s ability to produce refined, terroir-driven wines even in less heralded years. Delicate yet complex, with beautiful aromatics and silky texture, this wine offers exceptional drinking pleasure at a more accessible price point than the blockbuster vintages.

The Estate

Domaine du Clos de Tart stands as one of Burgundy’s most prestigious monopoles, a 7.53-hectare walled Grand Cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis that has been under single ownership since 1141. Acquired by the Mommessin family in 1932 and now owned by François Pinault’s Artémis Domaines, the estate has upheld centuries of winemaking tradition while embracing modern precision. The vineyard’s unique position on the mid-slope of the Côte de Nuits, combined with meticulous viticulture and masterful winemaking, produces wines of extraordinary depth, longevity, and distinctive character.

Clos de Tart Grand Cru – A Monopole Legend

Clos de Tart occupies a privileged east-facing slope in Morey-Saint-Denis, benefiting from optimal sun exposure and natural drainage. The vineyard’s Jurassic limestone soils, layered with red clay and iron-rich deposits, impart remarkable minerality and structure to the wines.

As a true monopole, Clos de Tart represents the vision of a single proprietor across the entire 7.53 hectares, allowing for unprecedented consistency and quality control. The ancient wall that encircles the vineyard creates a unique microclimate that protects the vines while concentrating flavors.

The terroir expresses itself through wines of incredible aromatic complexity, combining red and black fruits with forest floor notes, spice, and profound minerality—a signature that has made Clos de Tart one of Burgundy’s most sought-after Grand Crus.

The 2011 Vintage

The 2011 vintage in Burgundy was marked by a warm, dry spring followed by a cool, wet summer and challenging harvest conditions. Careful vineyard management and selective harvesting were essential to success. For top estates like Clos de Tart, the vintage produced wines of elegance and finesse rather than power.

This 2011 shows the monopole’s terroir with beautiful clarity—lighter in body than 2009 or 2010, but with exquisite aromatics, refined tannins, and pronounced minerality. The wine’s delicate structure and bright acidity make it especially food-friendly and accessible in its youth, while still offering a decade or more of aging potential.

Tasting Experience

  • Visual: Medium ruby-garnet with good clarity and a delicate, translucent quality
  • Nose: Elegant aromatics of red cherry, wild strawberry, and raspberry interlaced with rose petal, violet, and subtle spice. Notes of forest floor, tea leaf, and crushed limestone add complexity. The wine’s aromatic purity and finesse are immediately appealing
  • Palate: Silky, refined texture with delicate fruit balanced by vibrant acidity and subtle tannins. Flavors of red berries, earth, and mineral unfold with grace and precision. The monopole’s limestone terroir is beautifully expressed through bright minerality and elegant structure
  • Finish: Medium-long finish with persistent minerality, subtle fruit echoes, and refined tannins. The wine’s elegance and terroir transparency shine through in the delicate, focused conclusion

Service & Food Pairing

Serve at 15-16°C (59-61°F) in large Burgundy stems. Decant for 30-45 minutes to allow the delicate aromatics to fully express themselves. This lighter vintage can be overwhelmed by excessive aeration.

Exceptional pairings:

  • Roasted quail with wild mushroom and thyme jus
  • Duck breast with cherry compote and rosemary
  • Wild mushroom and truffle risotto
  • Veal sweetbreads with morel cream sauce
  • Soft, creamy cheeses like Brillat-Savarin or young Époisses

Cellaring & Evolution

Drinking beautifully now (2024-2030) with potential to age gracefully for another 5-10 years. The 2011’s delicate structure and bright acidity make it particularly approachable in its youth, though patient cellaring will reveal increasing complexity. Store in a cool, dark cellar at 12-14°C with 70% humidity.

Collector’s Note: Clos de Tart is one of only five monopole Grand Crus in Burgundy, making it exceptionally rare in the world of fine wine. The 2011 vintage offers exceptional value for collectors seeking a fully mature monopole Grand Cru at a more accessible price point. This is an ideal introduction to the legendary terroir of Clos de Tart.
