Domaine du Clos de Tart ‘Clos de Tart’ 2008
The Estate
Domaine du Clos de Tart stands as one of Burgundy’s most prestigious monopoles, a 7.53-hectare walled Grand Cru vineyard in Morey-Saint-Denis that has been under single ownership since 1141. Acquired by the Mommessin family in 1932 and now owned by François Pinault’s Artémis Domaines, the estate has upheld centuries of winemaking tradition while embracing modern precision. The vineyard’s unique position on the mid-slope of the Côte de Nuits, combined with meticulous viticulture and masterful winemaking, produces wines of extraordinary depth, longevity, and distinctive character.
Clos de Tart Grand Cru – A Monopole Legend
Clos de Tart occupies a privileged east-facing slope in Morey-Saint-Denis, benefiting from optimal sun exposure and natural drainage. The vineyard’s Jurassic limestone soils, layered with red clay and iron-rich deposits, impart remarkable minerality and structure to the wines.
As a true monopole, Clos de Tart represents the vision of a single proprietor across the entire 7.53 hectares, allowing for unprecedented consistency and quality control. The ancient wall that encircles the vineyard creates a unique microclimate that protects the vines while concentrating flavors.
The terroir expresses itself through wines of incredible aromatic complexity, combining red and black fruits with forest floor notes, spice, and profound minerality—a signature that has made Clos de Tart one of Burgundy’s most sought-after Grand Crus.

The 2008 Vintage
The 2008 vintage is celebrated as one of the finest of the modern era in Burgundy, producing wines of exceptional balance, purity, and aging potential. A cool growing season with perfect conditions at harvest resulted in wines with vibrant acidity, precise aromatics, and remarkable structure.
For Clos de Tart, 2008 was a triumph, capturing the monopole’s terroir with crystalline clarity. The wines show brilliant freshness, complex layering of flavors, and the kind of energetic structure that promises decades of evolution. Now entering its prime drinking window, this vintage reveals the monopole’s signature elegance while maintaining excellent aging potential for another 10-15 years.
Tasting Experience
- Visual: Luminous ruby-garnet with good depth and a youthful edge reflecting perfect maturation
- Nose: Refined aromatics of red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry interlaced with violet, rose petal, and subtle spice. Secondary notes of forest floor, sandalwood, and a distinctive mineral lift emerge with air. Classic Burgundian complexity at its finest
- Palate: Silky yet structured, with vibrant acidity providing backbone to layers of red fruit, earth, and spice. The monopole’s limestone terroir shines through with pronounced minerality. Flavors evolve from cherry and cranberry to more complex notes of truffle, cedar, and tea leaf
- Finish: Long, refined finish with persistent minerality, subtle tannins, and echoes of red fruit and spice. The wine’s breeding and terroir are evident in the elegant, lingering conclusion
Service & Food Pairing
Serve at 16-17°C (61-63°F) in large Burgundy stems. Decant for 1 hour to allow the wine to fully express its complexity. This vintage benefits from aeration to reveal its full aromatic spectrum.
Exceptional pairings:
- Roasted pheasant with autumn truffle jus
- Duck à l’orange with Grand Marnier reduction
- Wild mushroom and aged Comté tart
- Beef Wellington with Périgord truffle
- Selection of aged Burgundian cheeses including Époisses and Langres
Cellaring & Evolution
Entering its prime drinking window (2024-2028), with excellent potential to age gracefully for another 10-15 years. The 2008’s natural acidity and structure ensure longevity. Store in a cool, dark cellar at 12-14°C with 70% humidity. The wine will continue to develop greater complexity and tertiary characteristics with patient cellaring.
Collector’s Note: Clos de Tart is one of only five monopole Grand Crus in Burgundy, making it exceptionally rare in the world of fine wine. The 2008 vintage is particularly sought-after among collectors for its classical balance and aging potential. With François Pinault’s recent investment in the estate, older vintages from the Mommessin era have gained significant collector interest as benchmarks of traditional Burgundian winemaking.
