ROBERT PARKER ” Gaia Gaja tells me 2014 was one of the best vintages ever in Barbaresco, if not the best for her vineyards. She cites the prolonged growing season that continued at a slow rate during the cooler summer months only to speed up thanks to a heat spell at the very end, right before harvest. Nebbiolo loves slow maturity and a prolonged growth cycle: The 2014 vintage did indeed get off to an exceptionally slow start. The 2014 Barbaresco is not austere or astringent. Instead, it offers plump ripeness with rich fruit flavors backed by spice, licorice and tobacco. The wine offers good structure from the point of view of its tannins, yet there is no harshness or bitterness whatsoever. “

Sensory Profile & Usage

The Gaja Barbaresco DOCG 2014 offers an alluring bouquet of aromas, typical of aged Nebbiolo, including dried cherries, rose petals, hints of leather, and earthy undertones, evolving into more complex notes of spice and truffle with further bottle age. On the palate, it is dry and full-bodied, with a firm tannic structure that is beautifully integrated, balanced by refreshing acidity and a long, persistent finish. To fully appreciate its nuances, it is recommended to decant this vintage Italian wine at least an hour before serving at a temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F). Optimal storage conditions involve keeping the bottle horizontally in a dark, cool cellar with consistent temperature and humidity. The Gaja Barbaresco 2014 is a versatile food wine, pairing exquisitely with rich dishes such as roasted game, braised meats, truffle-infused risotto, and aged cheeses. Its elegance also makes it a superb wine to savor on its own, reflecting on its history and potential for future development.
