ROBERT PARKER ” Tasted blind at the Valandraud vertical at the property, the 2004 Valandraud was picked between 13 and 18 October, and consists of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. It has a more rounded and fruit-driven bouquet than the 2004 Cheval Blanc, with red plum, Hoi Sin, marmalade and even dried honeyed aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, rounded and caressing tannin. There is impressive body and concentration for a 2004, quite grippy in the mouth and it fans out with conviction on the finish with raspberry coulis, wild strawberry, white pepper and cedar notes. This shows up its 2003 counterpart and it should drink well for another 8-10 years. Tasted December 2016. “

Originally one of Bordeaux’s most famous “garage wine,” Valandraud has achieved the high status it enjoys today. This highly sought-after collectible wine offers a unique investment opportunity and a sensory experience that is both profound and unforgettable. The 2004 vintage is an excellent year.

Key Features & Benefits

The Chateau Valandraud 2004 is a testament to the unique terroir of Saint-Émilion. The vineyards, characterized by their clay-limestone soils, impart a distinctive minerality and structure to the wine. Jean-Luc Thunevin, often hailed as the original “garagiste,” employs meticulous, low-yield viticulture and innovative winemaking practices. These include hand-harvesting, careful selection of grapes, and fermentation in small oak barrels, all contributing to the wine’s concentration, complexity, and aging potential.

The 2004 blend typically consists primarily of Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, each varietal adding its unique nuance to the final blend.

Heritage & Collectibility

Chateau Valandraud’s story is one of rapid ascent in the world of fine wine. Established in the early 1990s by Jean-Luc Thunevin and his wife Murielle Andraud, Valandraud quickly gained a cult following for its bold, rich, and concentrated wines. The estate’s “garage wine” origins – a term referring to small-scale, high-quality productions – have become synonymous with its commitment to excellence and innovation. The 2004 vintage holds particular significance, representing a year of exceptional quality in Bordeaux. Investing in a bottle of Valandraud 2004 is not just acquiring a wine; it’s owning a piece of Bordeaux history, representing the dedication and vision of one of the region’s most influential winemakers.

The collectibility of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2004 wines, particularly from a renowned producer like Valandraud, adds significant value for discerning collectors.

Sensory Profile & Usage

The Chateau Valandraud 2004 presents a complex bouquet of ripe dark fruits, such as black cherry and plum, interwoven with notes of cedar, tobacco, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and rich, with velvety tannins and a remarkable depth of flavor. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and power.

To fully appreciate its nuances, serve this 2004 Bordeaux vintage at a temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F). Decanting for at least an hour before serving is highly recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic complexity. While approachable now, the Chateau Valandraud 2004 has significant aging potential and will continue to evolve beautifully in the bottle for decades to come. Store the bottle horizontally in a cool, dark, and humid cellar to ensure optimal preservation.
