ROBERT PARKER ” The 2005 Montrose continues to show brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with notes of blackcurrant, red fruits, loamy soil, black truffles and cigar ash. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it’s still brooding and tannic, with lively acids and an imposing chassis of structuring—and artery-cleansing—extract. Still an adolescent, it’s one of the last unrepentantly old-school vintages of Montrose, and Médoc purists couldn’t own enough. While this remains a very youthful wine, it is now apparent that the 2005 will, at maturity, surpass the 1989 and 1990. “

Key Features & Benefits
The Chateau Montrose 2005 benefits from the estate’s unique terroir, characterized by gravelly soils overlooking the Gironde estuary. This prime location provides excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure, crucial for achieving perfect ripeness in the predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that form the backbone of this classic Bordeaux blend (complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, typical of the region). Traditional winemaking techniques, including meticulous hand-harvesting and careful selection of grapes, contribute to the wine’s exceptional quality. Extended aging in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, imparts subtle notes of vanilla, cedar, and spice, adding complexity to the wine’s inherent fruit intensity.

Heritage & Collectibility
Chateau Montrose boasts a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Its consistent production of high-quality wines earned it the prestigious Second Growth classification in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, a testament to its enduring quality and prestige. The Saint-Estephe 2005 vintage is particularly noteworthy, widely regarded as one of the best in recent decades. This combination of a legendary estate and an exceptional vintage makes the Chateau Montrose 2005 an extremely desirable addition to any serious wine collection. Its rarity and proven aging potential further enhance its value as an investment.
Sensory Profile & Usage
The Chateau Montrose 2005 presents a deep garnet hue, hinting at its concentration and maturity. The nose is complex and inviting, offering aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, interwoven with notes of tobacco, leather, and subtle earthiness. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with firm tannins that provide structure and ensure its longevity. The flavors mirror the aromas, with a long, persistent finish that leaves a lasting impression.
