Gaja Barbaresco 1982: the estate wine, 21 years into Angelo Gaja’s tenure
By the 1982 harvest Angelo Gaja had worked at the family estate for 21 years, since 1961. The winery itself was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja in Barbaresco. In 1937 Giovanni Gaja, grandson of the founder, first printed “Gaja” in large red letters on the bottle labels. This bottle is the estate’s Barbaresco from the 1982 vintage, 0.75 L, a dry Nebbiolo red.
The single-vineyard wines were already on the market: Sorì San Lorenzo first appeared in 1967, Sorì Tildìn in 1970 and Costa Russi in 1978. Barbaresco from the estate’s own name had been made since the founding.

Barbaresco DOCG: a DOC in 1966, a DOCG in 1980
The Barbaresco denomination was recognised as a DOC in 1966. The DOCG followed by presidential decree of 3 October 1980, published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale on 3 September 1981. The denomination’s rules ask for at least 26 months of ageing, of which at least 9 in wood, counted from 1 November of the harvest year. Barbaresco wine itself is regarded as born in 1894, when Domizio Cavazza and nine other vintners founded the Cantina Sociale di Barbaresco, and the Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative followed in 1958 under the parish priest Don Fiorino Marengo.
