ROBERT PARKER ” I have had a remarkable number of opportunities to taste this wine. One of the most frustratingly irregular wines I have ever encountered, the 1970 Mouton can range from pure nectar, to a wine that is angular, austere, and frightfully hard and tannic. This bottle (one of the Reserve du Chateau bottlings that was mistakenly released by the estate and labeled with the letters R.C., rather than a number) was impossible to assess when decanted, given its hard, tough, impenetrable style. Nearly eight hours later, the wine had opened magnificently to reveal a classic bouquet of sweet cassis, tobacco, minerals, and exotic spice aromas. Opulent, full-bodied, thick, and juicy, the extraordinary evolution of this particular bottle would make a persuasive argument for long-term decanting. After being perplexed throughout much of this wine’s evolution, I was reassured by this bottle. No doubt Mouton’s high Cabernet Sauvignon content causes this wine to go through a tight, hard, ungenerous stage, and the 1970 requires 5-7 more years of cellaring. “

Overview

The Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1970 represents a pinnacle of vinicultural excellence, a testament to the legendary Pauillac terroir, and a highly sought-after collectible for discerning wine enthusiasts. Its continued appreciation in value and its exquisite bouquet make it a cornerstone of any serious wine collection.

Key Features & Benefits

The 1970 Mouton Rothschild is a classic Bordeaux blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, cultivated in the gravelly soils of Pauillac, Bordeaux. This unique terroir, coupled with the meticulous winemaking techniques passed down through generations, contributes to the wine’s exceptional structure, complexity, and aging potential. The 1970 vintage benefited from favorable weather conditions, resulting in grapes of optimal ripeness and concentration.

The traditional vinification process, including extended maceration and aging in new French oak barrels, imparts the wine with its signature depth, power, and refined tannins.

Heritage & Collectibility

Chateau Mouton Rothschild boasts a storied history, dating back to 1853 when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the estate. It was famously elevated to Premier Cru status in 1973, the only change ever made to the original 1855 classification. The 1970 vintage holds particular significance for collectors. It represents a time of increasing recognition for the Chateau.

Each year, Mouton Rothschild commissions a renowned artist to create an original label, further enhancing its collectibility. The scarcity of well-preserved bottles of the 1970 Mouton Rothschild, combined with its historical importance and investment potential, makes it a prized possession for any serious collector of Collectible Bordeaux 1970.

Sensory Profile & Usage

The 1970 Mouton Rothschild offers a complex and evolving aromatic bouquet. Initial notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco give way to more nuanced aromas of truffle, leather, and spice with extended aeration. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with firm yet refined tannins and a remarkable length. The flavors mirror the aromas, with a core of dark fruit complemented by earthy undertones and a lingering finish.

To ensure optimal preservation, this Vintage Mouton Rothschild should be stored in a dark, cool cellar with consistent temperature and humidity. Prior to serving, decanting for several hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully express its character. The ideal serving temperature is around 18°C (64°F). This exceptional Pauillac Premier Cru 1970 pairs beautifully with roasted red meats, game, and mature cheeses. Enjoy this magnificent Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1970 with the finest of company.
